Originally released in 2010 for the PSP exclusively in Japan, The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero took more than a decade to make it to Western nations. The turn-based combat system builds on the genre's fundamentals to craft something that is familiar but still unique. While the main storyline is quite lengthy, the RPG also has quite a bit of optional content that encourages players to thoroughly explore the map. Also, they pick up the ability to transform into monsters in battles, and they can even fuse with their partners' beasts to create an especially strong temporary fighter. Washing up on a dreamy island, players are given a lot to digest as they find their way to a village and, eventually, join the Rangers. Cassette Beasts present a genuine case for being the best Pokemon alternative of the last few years, and that comparison undersells just how different the title is from Game Freak's popular franchise. Temtem and Coromon are both good Deck Verified options that are likely to scratch someone's itch to catch 'em all, and they were joined by a new game in April 2023.
